Being Lafayette’s original neighborhood, the Downtown District holds nostalgia for those who have acquired memories over the years. 

Bill and Stephanie Bacque grew up in the area and raised their family in the same Downtown tradition. "For me, downtown is a part of my roots. I remember it in the 1950’s and 60’s with Abdalla’s, Boustany’s, McCrory’s (with their soda bar), Heymann’s grocery and department store, Antlers (with the old men playing dominos). It all remains so vivid. I went to elementary school at Cathedral. I would walk every day to my uncle’s office on Jefferson St. after school. Now my son, Joel, has a business on Jefferson St. His son will undoubtedly go to school at Cathedral and may walk to his Dad’s Subway after school. And yet another generation will have vivid roots in our lovely downtown.  That’s history alive. That’s Downtown Lafayette,” said Bacque.
